Leadership & Involvement
Learning Leadership Through Advocacy
As President, I led an executive committee of 16 members through planning events including Art Night at Yes We Cannibal, Voter Registration Drive with Black Votes Matter, 2023 NAACP at LSU Image Awards. We attended the Louisiana NAACP State Conference in Baton Rouge and worked alongside the Louisiana State Division of NAACP.
As a leader, I grew tremendously in my communication and delegation skills during this time by working with my Vice President to allocate responsibilities to each executive committee member. I found a passion for advocating for voting rights and equitable opportunities while working with the NAACP.
In my many roles as President and Vice President, I worked on graphics for the Instagram and helped with strategies to get community engagement.
Learning Leadership in the Classroom
I attended weekly meetings where cohort members and I worked on our leadership skills through lectures led by Campus Life about communication styles, conflict resolution management, and delegation.
In this role, I learned about some faults in my leadership and was able to improve upon them through real-life application. I worked on delegating more responsibilities to my executive board members within NAACP and SAAAS during this experience. This helped me grow by leaps and bounds to trust my board members with more responsibility and helped me step back and take time for myself.
Learning Leadership at the Department Level
As Vice President, I worked with the executive board and the African and African American Studies Department to increase the exposure of the department within the university by recruiting AAAS minors and majors. I made close connections within the department to improve the experience for students in the department.
With this department being founded in 2020, I worked with my SAAAS and AAAS colleagues to start from the ground up to elevate the experience of AAAS majors and minors.
In this role, I learned how departments are funded and SAAAS helped me learn how to make an impact with little monetary support.
